BIOGRAPHY
Corinthian Casuals was born during the long hot summer of 2005 as a one off band called "The Plebs", which was hastily put together in order to provide some entertainment for their year eleven leavers assembly at the Corsham School. The original line up for the band contained singer Stu Joslin, guitarists Alex Mitchell and Phil Greenland, and bass player/all around musical extroardinaire Max Goff. This was something of a supergroup of Corsham School bands, with Joslin and Greenland belonging to Sweeter Than Brazil and Mitchell and Goff being members of Small Gods. Despite the fact that elected lead singer Stu Joslin had never played drums at all, leave alone in front of an audience, circumstances dictated that, on the day, he was to play drums, and at the same time take lead vocals.
The show lasted for two songs, a bog standard cover of Bob Dylans "Knockin' On Heavens Door" and a rendition of Otis Lee Crenshaw's "Big Dennis" that Joslin had rewrote during a slow ICT lesson to be about his school tutor at the time, the legend that was and still is Steve Taylor-Beasley . Despite initial nerves, the show actually went down quite well and the decision was undertaken to continue with the band for the time being. Word began to spread, and during 2006 we played several gigs around the area, which, to begin with, were mainly at band nights at the school (including the famous May 11, 2006 show where, having consumed several beers at a party, Joslin made his way back to the school and turned out what most still say was his best performance on drums to date. He went back to the party afterwards!). Successful shows at Neston Memorial Hall and Corsham Club followed.
Joslin ended up staying on drums and lead vocals until late 2006, round about the same time that we decided to change our name to the classier sounding "Corinthian Casuals", when he decided that he had had enough and wanted to move back up to the front to allow greater communication between the band. In his place arrived Tom Page, the former Sweeter Than Brazil sticksman, who is now their regular drummer.
2007 saw a great year of growth for the band, with them averaging two gigs per month within the last half of the year, and also embarking on their first tour, which took in five venues in two weeks including locations as exotic as Amesbury and Bradford on Avon. However, sadly in October 2007 growing work commitments meant that Phil Greenland had to leave his position in the band. Joslin took over rhythm guitar duties and the band will continued as a foursome. But not in that way. Darling.
2008 became the year of the Casual, with an unprecedented fifty five shows played (an average of five per month), highlights of which included a barnstorming set at North Wiltshire's premier cooked meat and barn dance based summer event, the Pig & Jig, opening proceedings at Box Rocks, and also a triumphant return to their home town venue, the Two Pigs in Corsham, which featured a special guest appearance from ex Robert Plant guitarist and all around good egg Innes Sibun.
In 2009 the Casuals have continued to play several gigs every month in and around the South West of England. Sadly though, 14 September 2009 saw founding member Max Goff play his last gig for the band before leaving to attend university at their favourite pub, the Two Pigs in their home town of Corsham. Former Powerline guitarist John Boddington ably stepped into the fold and the band continued to blast their way across the counties as 2010 saw several venues clamouring to book the band for return appearances.
2011 will begin with the release of the bands first record, a live album recorded at the Queens Head in Box on Saturday 16 October 2010. Entitled 'Brand New In Box', a limited edtion pressing of one hundred copies was comissioned and will only be made available at the band's shows, which look as though they could end up topping 2008's record of fifty five for the year.
You can normally find the band in the Two Pigs on Pickwick Road in Corsham after Monday night rehearsals.
